Colavita/Sutter Home Pro Cycling Team Sweeps US Air Force Cycling Classic

(May 5, 2008)

Report Filed by Colavita/Sutter Home Cycling Team Presented by Cooking Light

The talent, drive, and ambition of the Colavita/Sutter Home Cycling Teams presented by Cooking Light were on full display this week as the men’s and women’s teams divided to contest major races on opposite ends of the US.  Sprinter Sebastian Haedo turned in what VeloNews called his “breakthrough” ride to win the inaugural UCI-ranked US Air Force Cycling Classic, with teammate Kyle Wamsley by his side on the podium in second.  Tina Pic of the Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Team overcame fierce competition, and by the end of the week, sheer exhaustion, to capture the overall win at USA Crits Speedweek.  Here are detailed reports from the team’s correspondent, Kirsten Robbins:

Crystal City, VA- Anibal Borrajo,  Davide Frattini, Luca Damiani, Gustavo Artacho, Kyle Wamsley and Sebastian Haedo of the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light had victory in their sights as they lined up at mid-day to contest the inaugural US Air Force Cycling Classic, one of North America's few UCI-ranked events.  The stellar men's field raced over the 12.5 kilometer circuit laps at speeds that only the strongest could survive. Represented in every breakaway over the rolling hills of Crystal City, the Colavita/Sutter Home squad controlled the race.  With one kilometer to go, Andrew Randall (Symmetrics) launched a solo attack but he did not stand a chance against Colavita/Sutter Home’s lead-out train, led by Davide Frattini  Davide Frattini, Anibal Borrajo, and Kyle Wamsley, followed by Sebastian Haedo, the protected sprinter on the day.  One by one, the Colavita/Sutter Home men took their turns at the front until the lone Symmetrics rider was reabsorbed, 200 meters before the start of the fierce sprint to the line where Sebastian crossed first and Kyle second.

Colavita/Sutter Home’s US national Criterium Champion Tina Pic continued her dominance in North American sprinting, winning the final event of the US Crit Series Speed Week in Sandy Springs to take the overall stage race victory. "It was really all about team work this week," said Tina after her 4th consecutive victory in the week-long series. "My team worked so hard out there and even though I have been feeling tired, it is so nice to be able to come through and win after all their hard work." Nicki Wangsgard, Shontell Gauthier, Tiffany Cromwell,  and Iona Wynter Parks lined up with Tina to start the final event of the US Crit Series in Sandy Springs after claiming the top spot on the podium during the previous night's Sunny King NRC event.  While the weekend's two NRC events, Sunny King  on Saturday and Roswell on Sunday fell into conflict with the Speed Week finale, the Colavita/Sutter Home women brought their A-game to both events, claiming victories in both races on Sunday.
