Main Sponsors: The team is funded by pharmaceutical companies who make glucose monitors,
insulin, and other products for diabetics. The teams main sponsor is Sanofi-aventis.

Team Type 1 was founded in 2004 by two young men with type 1 diabetes, Joe Eldridge and Phil
Southerland. The team is made stronger through the veteran management team of General
Manager Tom Schuler, a member of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, and Sport Director Ed Beamon,
who previously guided the longest-running, continuous U.S. based professional cycling team the
Navigators. "Team Type 1’s goal is to prove that by using the tools provided to manage diabetes,
exercise and healthy living, a person with diabetes can do the same as a normal person only better,”
said Phil Southerland. Pressing ahead, Team Type 1 has graduated from the armateur ranks into a
first year professional cycling team of which four of the 15 team members will race while managing
their diabetes.
